ANNE JONES
Artist's Statement
In 2002 I had a major stroke. I was left seriously impaired physically and unable to speak. For a while, even though I was completely lucid in my head and the words were all there, I could not retrieve them enough to speak them - or understand words on a page. I was only able to communicate by gestures... 'Yes' ...'No...' and was easily distracted by extraneous noises and conversations. It was immensely lonely and frustrating.
Against expectations, I have made a very good recovery, for which I am profoundly grateful, but for several years I couldn't do any work as an artist. Previously my work had been about the enigmatic space between inside and outside, informed by Derrida's writing on The Frame. Now I have begun to explore visually this experience which has so profoundly affected my life, I find that somehow the work is still about inside and outside, though viewed through a different prism.
I am currently focussing mostly on distortion of vision and loss of language but I expect the scope to widen as the work progresses.
